LFP Batteries: Why Chemistry Matters for Philippine Conditions

There are several lithium battery chemistries used in solar storage: NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt), NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminum), and LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate). In the Philippines, only LFP should be installed in residential solar systems.

Why? Three reasons: safety, heat performance, and cycle life.

Safety: LFP is the most thermally stable lithium chemistry. It does not undergo thermal runaway — the dangerous chain reaction that causes lithium fires — under normal abuse conditions. NMC and NCA batteries are more energy-dense but significantly more fire-prone, especially in hot climates. Given that Philippine homes frequently exceed 35°C indoors, thermal stability is not optional.

Heat performance: LFP batteries tolerate high ambient temperatures better than other chemistries. Their performance degrades less in heat, meaning your battery in Batangas in summer behaves closer to its rated capacity.

Cycle life: LFP delivers 6,000–8,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. NMC typically manages 2,000–3,000 cycles. Given that a solar battery cycles once per day, LFP lasts 16–22 years vs 5–8 years for NMC at the same usage rate.

Bottom line: if a solar company offers you an NMC battery for a Philippine home, ask why. There is no good reason.
